About Dominik Kofert. Dominik Kofert became interested in online poker during his studies of Mathematics and Philosophy at Oxford University from to As he became a successful poker player himself, he founded a poker discussion forum and began acting as an affiliate for various operators.
In he moved to Gibraltar with the other co-founders to set up PokerStrategy. Bet offers a hugely competitive sports betting product to a large international market.
Their live streaming service is the jewel in their crown, with over 20, events streamed live every year. As well as sports, Bet also offers first-class casino, games, poker, and bingo products.

Dominik, thanks so much for joining us. Warren : To start things off, would you please take a minute or two and tell our audience a little bit about the history of PokerStrategy, as well your own personal background?
Dominik : My name Dominik. My personal background is very common. I went to a high school in Germany and did my graduation there.
Then, I went to the UK to study mathematics and philosophy. There I got in touch with PokerWorld for the first time.
I was very skeptical at first because gambling is something you were not supposed to do. I basically rather quickly started looking at poker from a very mathematical and strategic point of view.
That worked out quite well. I started with Micro Stakes and worked up very quickly. A little later, I started earning a few affiliate banners and that worked really well.
Then, in , I decided to turn it into a proper business and professionalize. That was basically the foundation of PokerStrategy.
That was almost five years ago. Since then, we have grown extremely well. We are now live in 19 languages and have done really well for ourselves.
The core aspect of our website is the focus on the poker education, but also a strong focus on building a community of poker players, which has been a tremendous success for us.
Dominik : Well, no. There was a professional version. I did have a very ugly, small poker forum, which hosts at PokerStrategy. That was before that, which I basically started from my college dormitory.
It was quite ugly, actually. From a business point of view, it really took off in Warren : What was the original idea when you turned the forum into PokerStrategy.
What was the commercial idea behind that move? Dominik : Well, the commercial idea was always the same. I really just did it for fun.
I realized the first time that this might become a business when it just started growing and kept growing. You need to hire people. You need to professionalize.
You need to roll out that product to different languages and different markets. You need to get the proper infrastructure in place, and all these kinds of things.
It has to become professional, or I have to stop it, because it was taking too much of my time. Warren : I think many affiliates can relate to this, but you went to school for mathematics, not business.
How did you start the growth of the business? Did you hire a manager or did you just begin hiring people yourself? If your website is the first to report on a story, it is the one which will get linked to by everyone else.
I found myself, inadvertently, living this example a few months ago. I was one of the first people to retweet the Daily Mail article about Phil Ivey not getting paid his winnings by Crockfords Casino.
As a result the Daily Mail rang me up to be an expert , and asked if it was possible to cheat at Craps. It was vanity which made me do it, and I regretted it, because it really is an awful rag of a paper.
The rules of media are changing, and there are now many ways to get effective poker marketing without having to spend a fortune. Newsjacking is a brilliant example of how poker media and poker businesses can both make the most of a conversation which is already happening to increase their own exposure, as long as they can be quick and creative, and time it just right.

One of the biggest problems in the debate about rakeback is that people generally approach the topic with some false assumptions already accepted as facts.
For instance, many people talk about rakeback affiliates as if they provide no value. What is the threshold for the difference between contributing and cannibalistic?
Many rakeback sites have original content, strategy, etc articles on their site. Some poker training sites are rakeback sites. How are any of those different than say, some guy who slaps a bunch of banners up on a website and pays someone to write some poker room reviews?
Why is there no outcry from the affiliate community about the bonus code and room review sites that far outnumber rakeback sites? Or where do you draw the line with incentives?
Are they not also other ways of returning cash to players that is not part of the centralized system where all affiliates are on a level playing field.
It was one of the first and biggest sites that offered new players plenty of resources and free bankrolls to test their hand at online poker.
By doing this, Kofert and his site influenced the development of online poker immensely. They helped develop the culture of online grinders who would later become the backbone of the online poker industry.
The community has grown over the years, becoming a highly-influential place that has uncovered many scams, started a number of petitions, and also helped many players improve their game.
